Coach Jesper – Perform Like An Athlete

THe most optimal way to workout

It is a sunny September Saturday. Tommy is working out in the park when he sees an old friend passing by. Tommy yelled, “Hey, Victor!” Victor turned around, saw Tommy waving at him, and walked over to him, saying, “Hey, Tommy!”

“How’s it going, Victor?” said Tommy.

Victor responded, “It’s going well. I’m trying to lose some weight and get in shape. I tried to work out, but I couldn’t really figure out the best way to do it.”

“Well, I don’t believe there’s an optimal way to do it. I’ve tried a few workouts for muscle mass, strength, and also trained for a run, but it was different depending on my goal. Each workout was effective in its own way,” answered Tommy.

“You might be right,” said Victor.

“I also paid for a personal trainer to help me. I can connect you with him. He can help you create a plan for your workouts,” replied Tommy.

Victor said, “I don’t know. Isn’t that expensive?”

“No, it’s not too expensive. You can just buy a workout program. You just need a specific goal. What’s your goal?” answered Tommy.

“I think I’ll focus on strength training. Give me the number,” responded Victor.

Tommy sent the contact information for the personal trainer who helped him to Victor.

“You can say you’ve spoken to me and need help creating a workout program focused on strength,” said Tommy.

“Thank you for sharing the information,” responded Victor.

Tommy and Victor kept talking about working out and what could potentially be the most optimal workout. Victor made a good point that building a lot of muscle doesn’t make sense if you’re not a bodybuilder, and the same goes for endurance if you’re not a triathlete.

Tommy added that as we age, we lose some muscle because we tend to be less active, but it has been shown that a high VO2 max is a significant indicator of longevity. It’s important to remember that, for most of us, it’s about being able to move.

The discussion continued as they agreed that strength training might be the best style for longevity, focusing on the ability to move. Tommy also added that he really felt good when he was running, so having a mix of training that encompasses everything might be beneficial.

“Like an athlete,” said Victor. “You’re running, training for strength, and maintaining mobility to keep performing in your sport.”

“Yeah, exactly. It’s kind of like training like an athlete,” added Tommy.

“It was great talking to you again, Tommy, but I have to go home. See you,” replied Victor.

“See you out here training soon,” answered Tommy.
